From 2004-2015, I was director of the Georgia Scholastic Press Association (GSPA).
GSPA is the state press organization for all high school media — newspapers, magazines, yearbooks, broadcasts and literary magazines. When a school wins “best in state,” they win it from GSPA.
We held a fall conference attended by more than 600 students and teachers, and a spring awards ceremony attended by more than 500. We also held an annual summer camp, the Georgia Journalism Academy.
I supervised several student assistants and maintained a budget of roughly $80,000. I also served on the boards of the Journalism Education Association (JEA) and the Southern Interscholastic Press Association (SIPA).
Due to my work in high school journalism, I was recognized in 2010 with a distinguished service award from SIPA.
